Our Breast Cancer Story Part One

By Tony Ulrich

My wife was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in March 2009. Back then we didn't know that I was going to receive my own cancer diagnosis only seven months later. But in this mini series of six parts called "Our Breast Cancer", I intend to talk about how our lives have changed when we learned about my wife's cancer. It's important that you understand, that the following text is from my point of view only, not my wife's .

It was the 3rd of March of 2009 when Ann called me up in my hotel room. I was out for business attending a conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. A few weeks prior to that, she just had her annual mammogram done. She was called back into the doctor's office because apparently there were some irregularities seen on the slides. Nothing really to freak out over, since it happened before and her mom and her sisters had a few biopsies done, too, and they always came back okay.

So I was completely in shock when she told me, that her doctor had just called her to tell her, that she had Breast Cancer. It was brutal. I cannot even describe what and how I felt. I felt empty and overwhelmed at the same time. This couldn't be true. Not my wife. I started crying and maybe that's what made me feel so guilty. Because I knew I had to be strong now for Ann, yet, there I was, crying my heart out.

It killed me that I couldn't be with Ann. Instead I was trapped in a hotel in North Carolina. My flight back home was scheduled two days later - but maybe there was a chance to get me on a plane heading back to Jersey the next day.

When we hung up the phone, I completely fell apart. I pray for you that you will never have to go through anything like that.

And in the midst of all that, all of a sudden all the things in my life got assigned with different priorities. Ann's health was now the single most important thing. All our struggles with the mortgage, the bills, etc. became irrelevant instantaneously. I prayed and asked the Lord for help. I was never into organized religion, but I always had faith. Well, he might have been a little surprised that I asked him for help, but for some reason, I felt that he was there for me and I experienced a sense of comfort.

Now it was time o figure out a way to get back to Jersey as soon as possible. I went on the Internet to check my airline's schedule and to my surprise there was a flight going out that same night at 10:00PM and so I changed my reservation accordingly. My airline called me back about five minutes later to let me know, that this flight was likely to get cancelled because of the weather situation, however, if I could make it to the airport within the next 40 minutes, they could get me on an earlier plane. I knew that this was practically impossible, but I told them that I will try. I had to pack, check out, organize a cab, get through customs, etc...and all that in 40 minutes?!

The hotel told me that there was no way to get a cab that quickly, so they jumped in and gave me a ride to the airport. That was fantastic. The only problem: my driver had not the slightest clue of the area since he was from Kentucky and just signed up for his new job a few days earlier. As a consequence, he missed the airport exit off of the highway we were on. That was it. Since the next U turn was miles and miles away, I had to say Good Bye to my plane.

Whether it was coincidence or did God pulled a couple of strings for me, I don't know. But miraculously, I did still made it. The airline held the plane for me and three other customers. And a few hours later that night, I was back in Jersey and together with my wife. - 29763

Chemotherapy Medications For Cancer - LR

By Lee Reid

Once a patient is diagnosed with cancer, it is required that the doctor recommend him/her the appropriate types and dosages of cancer chemotherapy drugs. It is highly important that doctors take enough time and display enough patience in talking to the patient suffering from such a serious condition.

The doctor-patient relationship is almost as important nowadays as the suggested cancer chemotherapy is because offering a good treatment without carefully explaining the steps to follow and the potential side effects that may appear along the way may completely discourage the patient. When there is professional support and human compassion in the approach to the illness, cancer patients have higher chances of recovery thanks to the positive attitude.

The basis for cancer chemotherapy was put in 1940 when doctors used folic acid an nitrogen mustards in the role of antagonist drugs. With the growing number of tumor cases, cancer chemotherapy has apparently become an industry registering huge success on the market through the wide variety of drugs that it produces. Even though one may think that the world has impressively evolved since the 1940s, it is surprisingly enough to mention that most of the principles discovered back then in cancer chemotherapy still apply today.

On certain occasions cancer chemotherapy proves insufficient in the fight against the tumor growth. As a result, the combined chemotherapy regimen may not be sufficient and the doctor may recommend surgery. This procedure is not always one hundred percent certain in removing entirely the tumor and there are still chances that the cancerous cells may reoccur. So doctors and researchers have come up with an adjuvant cancer chemotherapy treatment that relies on drugs meant to prevent the recurrence of cancer and clear away any signs of cancer left after removing the tumor. This cancer chemotherapy adjuvant seems to have really lengthened the life of many patients suffering from colon cancer.

Whether you call it chemotherapy or drugs administration, the process is all the same and so are the risks of adverse reactions and the health threats. There are plenty of categories of cancer chemotherapy drugs, and anyone interested can research on the Internet or in books. Whichever the medium of getting informed, keep in mind the fact that the benefits and the risks brought about by a certain medication have to be carefully investigated and analyzed in the context of a patient's medical history. - 29763

Information About Mesothelioma Lung Cancer

By Kor Rassad

Mesothelioma lung cancer has been around a number of years but a lot of people are not fully aware of what it means. This is a form of cancer that is found in the protective tissue that surrounds the lungs and other internal organs that we have. It is generally found in people that have had a lot of exposure to asbestosis, but it can be found in others as well but not nearly as much.

The number of instances of this disease has been seen to be on the rise over recent years. This could be due to the age of those that were often found to be working in asbestosis related occupations aging. Men are more often the gender that develops this disease, but women are able to as well, mind you it is relatively rare for this to happen.

Asbestos can be attributed to a lot of health conditions that people develop, especially if they have been working around it for a number of years. It has been found that the more that a person is around this substance that there is far more chance of them becoming ill because of it in some way or another.

A lot of the time a person may not have any idea that they are suffering from any problems at all as the symptoms can take years to develop, but when they do, they are quite noticeable. Shortness of breath and chest pain is often one of the first that a person notices. Along with this weight loss and abdominal pain is another thing that can become apparent. There are also lists of other symptoms that can develop so it is best that a doctor be notified to confirm a diagnosis.

The symptoms that this disease presents are very similar to other conditions that are common which can make it very difficult when it comes to diagnosing it. A doctor will need to review a complete medical history of the patient which will include any exposure to asbestos if it has been something that has happened. Following this there will have to be a whole battery of tests done like x-rays, Cat scans and MRI's that the doctor will need to be able to see the area that is affected more clearly. Once they see the results they need to perform a biopsy of this area to confirm whether or not it is mesothelioma or not.

Once they confirm what is going on and that the disease is indeed present, they will then have to look in to how far it has gone. This can make a huge amount of difference when it comes to the types of treatment options that a person has to look at in order to try and prevent the spreading of it.

Looking after all areas of your health is a vital thing that people need to do. Many people put this off and then wonder why serious complications arise years down the road. Staying in contact with your doctor is an extremely important thing that we all should do. This can prevent some very serious issues from occurring that can be very debilitating or even lethal if they are left too long. - 29763

Facts About Cancer And Chemotherapy LR

By Lee Reid

Cancer patients may have no other choice but to resort to chemotherapy in order to treat their illness. In oncology, adjuvant chemotherapy will have quite a special role for the patient because it is related to other cancer treatments. Adjuvant chemotherapy represents an additional treatment given to the patient after surgery to help prevent any cancerous cells that may have not been completely removed during surgery from developing or increasing in number. The patient may relapse even if surgery has been performed because unfortunately, medicine is not sufficiently developed to be able to foresee whether cancer cells will reoccur or not.

Chemical-based treatments together with radiotherapy are part of the same adjuvant chemotherapy category prescribed by doctors to stop cancer spread. Statistics indicate that about a third of the patients who have received adjuvant chemotherapy treatment have resumed good health only through surgical intervention. For those who are not included in the above mentioned third, the long term aim of the adjuvant chemotherapy is to increase the life extent of the sufferer.

The types of cancer in which adjuvant chemotherapy is used are quite various and here we may include colon cancer, lung, pancreatic, breast and prostate cancer as well as some forms of gynecological cancers.

In terms of parallel treatments, adjuvant chemotherapy is complemented by neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. The latter is given to patients before the primary treatment and it may take the form of chemical drug-based treatment. For example, neo-adjuvant chemotherapy may be prescribed to a breast-cancer patient who will have to undergo surgery for breast removal. The aim of such a type of therapy is to reduce the tumor size so that there are fewer risks and a higher rate of success in the surgical intervention.

All in all, adjuvant chemotherapy is presently considered more rewarding in results when it is used in the aftermath of the operation rather than prior to it. As for the drug efficiency, the level is a lot higher when the treatment is administered intravenously; another way of enhancing drug efficiency is to use it locally in the exact body part attacked by cancer. - 29763

Breast Chemotherapy Treatment - LR

By Lee Reid

Breast chemotherapy is the cancer treatment used when the disease has attacked the mammary glands. The treatment aims at reducing the tumor size and at killing the cells with a rapid multiplication rate. Breast chemotherapy can be of very many kinds depending on the combination of drugs that the doctor has selected for you. Correct information on the way the medication works as well as an analysis of the side effects and the optimistic evaluation factors ought to be part of the discussion between doctor and patient that precedes the treatment as such.

Breast chemotherapy is administered either orally or intravenously and it is usually given in cycles. The drug reaches in the blood and then travels through the entire body to locate and attack the sick cells meant to be destroyed. Even though breast chemotherapy is directed at breast cancer, the drugs that are recommended as treatment may act on whatever other unhealthy cells that may have already developed somewhere else than the breast. From this point of view doctors call breast chemotherapy a systemic treatment precisely because it may act all throughout the patient's organism.

Breast chemotherapy is often prescribed after mastectomy or lumpectomy and in these conditions it is referred to as adjuvant therapy. The treatment is possible in this form only when medical tests indicate that the cancer is limited to the breast area only.

Another case when breast chemotherapy represents a necessity is when cancer has passed to other parts of the body starting from the lymph nodes. This particular spread is known as metastatic breast cancer and women rarely have this form at the time of the diagnosis.

Whichever of the breast chemotherapy treatments you are to receive it is important to know how you can figure out if it has any effect. This does not mean however that it is mandatory for you to experience side effects or otherwise your treatment is inefficient. Such an investigation approach is totally incorrect. Adjuvant breast chemotherapy may have no side effects but it has always proved to be very helpful as it impedes unhealthy cells from spreading or redeveloping in your body.

All in all, breast chemotherapy makes no easy treatment. It is probably the devastating treatment and the mutilation brought by breast cancer in itself that has increased awareness among women, making disease detection a lot easier and in the early stages of development. - 29763

Hair Loss And Chemotherapy - LR

By Lee Reid

One of the most frequent side effect of cancer treatments is chemotherapy hair loss. Why does one lose hair during chemotherapy? Well, the drugs used in this type of cancer treatment are very strong, therefore very efficient in attacking the rapidly developing cancer cells. These medicines also attack other cells in the body that have a rapid growth; the cells in the digestive tract and the hair follicles are the main examples here.

The effects of chemotherapy on hair are not limited only to the scalp as the procedure affects the hair on the body, too. Thus, patients will experience the loss of eyebrows, eyelashes, pubic and armpit hair.

The variety of the drugs used in chemotherapy is incredibly high with hundreds of medicines available. Some of these will trigger chemotherapy hair loss more quickly than others, but some may not even cause such a side effect. The concentration of the drugs is another aspect to consider when hair loss is under discussion, as hair loss ranges from thinning to complete baldness. Thus, discussing the medication that will be prescribed with the doctor and nurse is very important as they are the specialists able to inform the patient on what to expect from chemotherapy.

In most cases you'll start losing hair within ten or fourteen days after you start chemotherapy. It may fall out quite fast, either in clumps or gradually. Chemotherapy hair loss remains a problem throughout the entire period of the treatment and a month afterwards. Half of the hair can fall out before this is noticed by people around. Fortunately, in the majority of cases, chemotherapy hair loss is a temporary effect. Hair will probably grow back within six months to one year after the cessation of the treatment. The new hair could have a slightly different shade of color, with the mention that even the texture could be altered too.

The hair recovery period after chemotorapy is six weeks on the average, and the growth rate will be somewhere around a quarter inch per month. When the hair starts growing back again, it might be a little different from the hair that was lost because of therapy. The color and texture alteration will be a first recovery sign and the hair will become what it used to be before the treatment the moment cellular pigmentation is functioning normally all over again. Unfortunately, chemotherapy hair loss cannot be prevented as none of the treatments available is completely free of such side effects. - 29763

Understand Mesothelioma Symptoms And Signs

By Kor Rassad

The prevalence of cancer in the world is on the rise. If you have been previously exposed to high concentrations of asbestos then you run the risk of developing mesothelioma. This is a cancer that occurs in the lining of the lungs and then over time spreads to other organs. In many cases it will be a terminal disease though if caught early help can be given. You need to be able to spot the mesothelioma symptoms if you believe yourself to be at risk.

The options open to a mesothelioma patient are few and far between. But there is treatment possible that can allow an individual to prolong the quality of their life. If you have any of the following symptoms then you should immediately consult your local doctor about your concerns.

1. Blood in throat: If you ever cough up blood then there will be a condition that needs treating. Coughing up any amount of blood combined with a difficulty swallowing is one of the most common signs of mesothelioma.

2. Weight Loss: It is common to see a loss of weight in people that have mesothelioma. There can be different reasons that produce a loss in body mass but if you have not altered your workout regime or diet then any drop can be cause for alarm.

3. Pleural Effusion: it is known that the fine dust associated with asbestos can cause irritations in the linings of the lungs. This in turn can produce a condition known as pleural effusion in which there is a build up of liquid in the lungs. This may be presented as severe chest pains or problems associated with breathing.

4. Lumps: In many cases of cancer there were be abnormal growths or lumps that develop on the surface of the skin. With mesothelioma this occurs in the chest or abdomen regions. It is not difficult to check your body for lumps whenever you take a bath or shower.

5. Cough: If you have mesothelioma then you will often have a dry cough but with no phlegm. This is different than if you have a cold or flu as there will be mucus present.

6. Aches: If not diagnosed promptly the cancer can spread quickly to other parts of the body. This will produce aches and pains in new regions.

7. Bowel: Mesothelioma can also lead to issue relating to the stomach and bowel. Frequent episodes of diarrhea or constipation may be caused by the spread of tumors. Of course bowel problems may also be due to a bad diet so a correct check up is essential.

Whether you have only one or a number of the above conditions then you should seek medical guidance. Mesothelioma is a well studies illness and a professional health specialist should be able to make a correct diagnosis. - 29763

Why Mesothelioma Lawsuits Should Be Perfectly Planned

By Heidi Wingrain

Litigations always prove to be tricky. Mesothelioma litigations are more so. Sometimes mesothelioma lawsuits are discarded for very basic reasons. Analyzing those reasons will help us understand why they fail and what has to be done to avoid rejection. The main fact is that mesothelioma cancer is an infection occurring due to asbestos inhalation before many years. It takes a long duration of time for the infection to come out and assume larger proportions.

First of all, mesothelioma cancer is an infection resulting from asbestos inhalation many years ago. It takes decades for the cancer to come out and assume life-threatening proportions. Secondly, most of our recently diagnosed mesothelioma patients were infected at a period when there were no prevalent laws governing asbestos use, precautionary measures etc. Finally, the number of mesothelioma lawyers with required expertise is very less.

These factors combine to make mesothelioma lawsuits full of loopholes. Naturally, the profit motivated people would try to evade the law for not wanting to part with money. Hence the lawyer and the patient should sit together and plan things before filing such a lawsuit. Most important of all, the plaintiff should inform his lawyer about all the details regarding the infection. It is always better not to hide anything from your lawyer. All documentary evidence concerning health and work history needs to be given to the lawyer to prepare a case without any loopholes.

It is also important that the complainant and his lawyer develop a rapport so that the can move forward smoothly. The lawyer should, in turn, be able to implant a sense of security in the mind of his client. It would be even better if the lawyer has practical experience and enough skill to take the mesothelioma lawsuit to a desirable decision.

Finding a suitable lawyer to represent you in the court of law is not too difficult because of the advent of many law firms dealing in mesothelioma lawsuits exclusively. Every patient has the option to check the reliability of different such law firms and employ the one that he feels the most desirable. As most mesothelioma patients do not survive for more than two years after showing symptoms, mesothelioma lawsuits should not drag on for extended periods. Negative outcomes of such litigation may add insult to injury to the already suffering mesothelioma patient. - 29763

Mesothelioma Treatment And Its Outcome

By Heidi Wingrain

Various factors like the level of infection, the area of infection, the extent of contamination, the condition of the affected cells, the patient's age, his overall health etc have to be considered for mesothelioma treatment. The patient should be made aware of his treatment process before it is started.

Mesothelioma treatment methods are wide and varied. The common ones practiced are surgery, radiation and medication. Removal of cancer cells are done through surgery whereas use of powerful drugs is involved in medication or chemotherapy. Malicious cells of cancer are destroyed using high energy x-rays or other energy beams in the process of radiation. As the case demands, physicians sometimes use a combination of two or more of these techniques.

Blood tests are not highly successful in analyzing the kind of cancer, whereas procedures like thorascocopy, video assisted thoracic surgery, mediastinoscopy and laproscopy are used to identify the problem. The actual mesothelioma treatment will begin after proper diagnosis.

For patients with comparatively mild infection, surgeries for removal of the cancer from its roots are resorted to. Palliative surgical procedures like chest tube drainage and pleurodesis, thoracoscopy and pleurodesis, pleuroperitoneal shunt and pleurectomy treats the symptoms of the disease rather than the cancer itself. Chest tube drainage and pleurodesis is the most common palliative treatment, which removes the pleural effusion from the affected areas.

In order to eradicate the disease completely strong treatment procedures are undertaken. Decortication is the procedure used to remove tumor from patients without removing the lung. This is done in stage 1 and stage 2 patients. Pneumonectomy is the procedure for removing the tumor, by extracting the lung. These two procedures are done in pleural mesothelioma cases, which account for more than three-fourths of total cases. Surgery will be conducted only after appropriate tests and analysis.

Chemotherapy helps to cease the spread of cancer, to shrink tumors and get rid of the remnants of the disease after the surgery. Here chemicals are used to fight cancer and they prevent the cancerous cells from multiplying. Palliative chemotherapy is used where there are no hopes of survival. Radiotherapy makes use of penetrating beams of extreme energy or particle streams. Thus mesothelioma treatment is a many-sided tactic meant to lessen the anguish of the patients and eradicate the cancer. - 29763

Signs You Should Learn About Identifying Signs Of Skin Cancer

By Peter Anderson

If you are older you may never have heard about the need for sun screen until recently. This is because in the last decade or so, the link between skin cancer and sun exposure has become more and more evident. If you are someone who spent years without wearing sunscreen, knowing how to recognize the signs of skin cancer can be the best way to keep healthy and get treatment when and if it becomes necessary.

Even people who do not know a lot about skin cancer have probably heard about malignant melanoma. This is because skin doctors stress the importance of identifying these fast spreading, deadly tumors. They are called melanomas because they start in moles and areas where melanin, the pigment factor in skin, is present. People with more melanin in their skin often have more of a protection against these tumors but it is no reason to go without sun screen if you will be outside.

If you want an easy way to detect melanomas, you should remember the "ABC's" of skin cancer detection. You want to check the Appearance of a mole. You want to look at its Borders. And, lastly, the Color of that mole can be a key to whether or not it is malignant. A benign mole will not look different in a short period of time. It will have regular, even borders and be a normal brown color. Anything that is raised, fast growing, uneven or oddly colored should be assessed by a doctor as soon as possible. This makes your chances of survival much more likely.

Although most people do not know as much about them, basal cell carcinomas are actually more common than melanomas are. They are also much harder to identify since they can have a variety of different appearances. They may look like a scaly patch of skin. They may also look like a weeping, open sore that will not heal with time. Or, it can look like a raised sore with a sunken middle that may or may not weep and ooze. The last appearance of a basal cell carcinoma is an area of scar tissue that does not correspond with an injury. These cancers can be very disfiguring and can also spread to other areas of the body, although this is not as common as it is with melanomas.

Squamous cell carcinoma is another very common form of skin cancer. Like basal cell carcinoma these also start off as raised lumps, bumps or wart-like areas. They may also crust or scale over but may also open up and bleed or ooze on a regular basis. It can start out as a rough, red painful rash that may eventually form into a lump or bump and begin to grow from there.

If there are any areas that you are worried about or that look at all unusual, you need to see your doctor to have them looked at. The doctor will take a biopsy or sample of the cells in the area you are worried about. Depending on what they find, you will then begin an appropriate course of treatment depending on what stage the cancer is at, whether it has spread and what kind of skin cancer you have.

The effectiveness of skin cancer treatment is much better when you begin treatment shortly after a skin cancer has started to grow. Unfortunately many people do not regularly perform self examinations at home and do not get any areas they are concerned about checked out. Because early treatment can be the key to getting rid of the tumor completely, it is critical that you get in to see your doctor so that they can check you over as well. - 29763

How Mesothelioma Compensation Can Help Patients In The Short Term

By Heidi Wingrain

Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer that's nearly always caused by being exposed to asbestos. In this disease, malevolent cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers almost all of the body's internal organs. Its most typical site is the pleura ( outer liner of the lungs and internal chest wall ), but it might also occur in the peritoneum ( the liner of the intestinal cavity ), the heart, the pericardium ( a sac that surrounds the heart ) or tunica vaginalis.

Everybody knows that the most essential factor for a happy life is health. Without health you can not enjoy any other kind of joys like money or power. Mesothelioma compensation is not a complete solution to patients because the patients survive only up to two years of diagnosis. That also is done with the support of medicines and other means.

Exposure to asbestos takes place normally in work places and this leads to mesothelioma cancer. Since the last few centuries asbestos was widely used for many purposes, thanks to the versatile nature of the mineral. But till a few decades before nobody knew the danger lurking behind the use of the mineral. When it was understood that asbestos was the reason behind the ever increasing number of mesothelioma patients, governments started applying certain preventive measures during the manufacture and application of asbestos. Legal rights were also granted to the victims to claim for compensation from the irresponsible company owners.

With the assistance of the law, many patients have brought the errant employers under the law. With mesothelioma compensation awareness increasing, there has been a steady rise in the number of such cases also. Mesothelioma compensation tries to address two difficult situations of the victim - managing the household expenditure and the expensive treatment. Apart from this, punitive fines would be extracted from companies if the court finds that they have put the health of the workers in peril without taking precautionary measures.

But it cannot compensate for the loss of health and the resulting death. But mesothelioma compensation brings in a sense of satisfaction that all the medical bills are paid in time, the household expenditures were met properly and a huge fortune is being left to dependents to build a life of their own. Paying off medical bills is very essential because if the payment is stopped, sop does the treatment. The claims has top be field writhing the stipulated time frame and a professional mesothelioma attorney is also required to fight the case to a happy ending. - 29763

You Are Protected Under The Mesothelioma Law

By Kor Rassad

A rare type of cancer caused by asbestos exposure is mesothelioma. Industries would use asbestos during the manufacturing processes and employees working here were exposed to this substance. All over the world, thousands of people are diagnosed every year. This cancer is hard to diagnose and once it is discovered, it usually spread to a more advanced stage. Treatments are costly and depending on what stage it is in treatments can be limited. The mesothelioma law will help those who are victims of this disease.

Mesothelioma is found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers the internal organs. Mesothelioma symptoms can vary depending on where the cancer is located and what stage it is in. Some symptoms include fever, anemia, blood clotting, shortness of breath, chest pain and bowel obstruction. To diagnose this condition accurately, a doctor will collect samples of tissue to be analyzed by a pathologist.

The exposure to asbestos makes up 70 - 80% of all mesothelioma cases. Unfortunately, it can take 30 to 50 years for mesothelioma symptoms to appear in which by this time the cancer can be far advanced. It is important to know that people living with this disease has legal rights if asbestos is the cause of their illness. An individual can be protected under the mesothelioma law if asbestos is the cause.

Family members of those working in factories where asbestos is used can increase their risk of developing mesothelioma. This is because asbestos particles will cling to the clothes and hair of an individual. If that person does not wash up or change clothes, they bring it home to their family. Other family members may be exposed when doing laundry, for example.

Millions of people have worked in industries using asbestos before the hazards of it was discovered. Asbestos was used in during many manufacturing of products. Some factories that used asbestos include auto parts, mining, roofing shingles, and insulation, among others.

Options become limited for those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma because symptoms take years to appear. Surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are all used for treatment. Doctors will evaluate the disease, such as what stage it is in and the location of it to determine what type of treatment to give.

The cost of treatment is expensive but under the mesothelioma law, a victim has rights and can be compensated for their losses with the help of a lawyer. Lawyers can help with these types of cases since they are familiar with the mesothelioma laws in your area. - 29763

Mesothelioma Lawsuit And How It Can Help You

By Heidi Wingrain

Mesothelioma is a deadly form of cancer found in persons exposed to asbestos for a long duration of time. It takes many years for the victims to develop symptoms of the disease. This makes the process of cure and compensation complicated. The unfortunate victims suffer due to the negligence of the employer. Hence several laws have been formulated by the government to ensure justice to the victims. A mesothelioma lawsuit has to be file as soon as someone is diagnosed with this cancer.

Sometimes family members of the workers, who are working in the same atmosphere, also contract the disease. Anybody who is affected from mesothelioma due to exposure to asbestos is eligible for compensation. The states have constituted funds to help the patients. However, these funds can be availed only by filing a mesothelioma lawsuit.

It was in the 19th century that the link between mesothelioma asbestos was established. The first lawsuit was file in 1929 against manufacturers of asbestos and owners of workshops dealing with asbestos. Lack of proper implementation of safety measures was the reason for filing the case. After this first case, many have been able to get compensation through lawsuits. The amount of compensation and the time taken to get it actually depends on the mesothelioma lawyer. If the lawyer is skillful and experienced he can make any employer to part with the compensation amount. He will be able to overcome any loophole found by the employer to evade paying the amount.

Bringing a mesothelioma lawsuit to a favorable conclusion is not an easy task. The most important thing in handling the case is that the lawyer should have a thorough understanding of the case and his clients. A lot of hard work is needed in this regard. Mesothelioma not only destroys the body cells of the affected persons, it also destroys the peace and mental harmony of the victims and their family members. Hence the lawyer should show care, concern and compassion towards his clients.

Let us see the reasons why a mesothelioma lawsuit should be filed. The most important fact is that there are statutes of limitations which make it mandatory to file the lawsuit with in a stipulated time after the diagnosis. The second factor is regarding the financial crunch the family would be facing due to the diagnosis and treatment. The compensation amount will reduce the financial stress. Thirdly, most of the mesothelioma lawyers, being experienced can guide in finding the best doctors in the field. - 29763

Reasons For Negative Mesothelioma Prognosis

By Heidi Wingrain

Mesothelioma prognosis is devastating for the victims and their near and dear ones. The reasons for these are wide and varied. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer which infects the mesothelium, the protective covering of vital internal organs. Over exposure to asbestos is the cause for contracting the cancer. This exposure can be either from work places or asbestos quarries. Any way the effect of infection varies from person to person depending on the stage of cancer at the time of diagnosis, the capacity of the body to give positive response to the treatment and the age and overall health of the victim.

The first reason for negative mesothelioma prognosis is that the disease lies inactive for several decades before the symptoms arrive. By that time the cancer may have even reached vital organs like lungs, abdomen or heart. Doctors categorize mesothelioma into four stages. The first two stages are relatively easy to treat, but the prognosis of stage 3 and 4 are not bright enough. In many cases, mesothelioma infection is detected only when the patient visits the clinic for other physical illnesses.

Secondly, being a rare cancer, many cancer centers and cancer specialists do not possess the required expertise to treat mesothelioma. Researches are still on to find a successful treatment for advanced mesothelioma. For stage III and IV, presently, the emphasis is only to alleviate pain and provide a better and comfortable environment for the patient.

The pleural, the peritoneal and the pericardial are the three different types of cancer. Pleural mesothelioma is the most curable one, but is found in many people. In this case the infection affects the protective covering of the lungs. Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy are the treatment methods employed to treat this. The abdominal cavities get affected in peritoneal mesothelioma and are more dangerous than the pleural type. Pericardial mesothelioma is the third type and the most dangerous one. It affects the heart area and is a fatal infection. It is also seen commonly that some doctors diagnose the type of mesothelioma wrongly thereby making the situation more serious.

However in these modern days mesothelioma prognosis has become less scary due to the availability of a wide range of treatment methods like photodynamic therapy, gene therapy, multimodality therapy etc. Finally the survival depends on the type of mesothelioma and the patient's response to the treatment process. - 29763

The Advantages Of Mesothelioma Settlement

By Heidi Wingrain

Mesothelioma patients have two lawful alternatives to claim good mesothelioma compensation. They can either file a court case and employ an attorney to plead for justice, which is often a long drawn out process, or arrive at an out of court settlement. Usually it is the larger corporate houses and multinationals that agree for such a mesothelioma settlement without involving the jury since such a settlement would save them indictments from the court, cut down on legal expenses and use manpower employed for the purpose for better activities. These palpable advantages make many companies opt for such a settlement.

There is another major factor that pushes the defendant towards a Mesothelioma settlement. Courts, of late, have been severe on those defendants who had knowingly put their workforce into hazardous asbestos exposure. Such severe reprimands can result in severe erosion of clientele. Companies resort to mutually agreed settlements when they know very well that the litigant is absolutely right in pointing fingers at them and have all the necessary proofs. Litigants are also happy to evade hard-nosed arguments and counterclaims, which may take a considerable time to reach the logical end.

Bringing a erring defendant to the table require a lot of hard work, and lawyers who represent the mesothelioma litigant has to embark on cumbersome exploration on all factors involved in the case, like the health history and work history of the plaintiff.

Many erring companies try to escape without paying enough compensation by stating that no laws prescribing precautionary measures were present when the subject litigant was employed at their firms. This is a major irritant, but a thoroughly investigated and bound case cannot be defeated easily by such lame arguments. But it is not possible to arrive at a mesothelioma settlement with bankrupt of non-functional companies.

The amount of compensation money accrued through mesothelioma settlement differ from state to state, the health and age of the litigant etc. As the disease is noticed only after many decades of asbestos exposure, the process becomes even more difficult. This factor has been responsible for many companies escaping such lawsuits in the past. However, no perfectly bound mesothelioma lawsuit can be defeated easily. - 29763

How to Tell if You're at Risk for Mesothelioma

By Heidi Wingrain

Mesothelioma is a serious disease, and 99% of all cases are attributable to exposure to asbestos. It's a disease that can remain dormant for as long as 20 to 50 years before it starts taking its devastating toll on a person's health and life. Although the cancer may show up in less than 20 years in some cases, most people don't develop any symptoms until somewhere around 35 years after exposure. Early symptoms may not ring any bells, either, because they may be as basic as general pain in the chest or back. Therefore, anyone who ever worked in an environment where there were asbestos fibers needs to be on guard for the rest of their lives.

Mesothelioma patients have been diagnosed as having cancer cells surrounding their lungs or abdominal organs or inside their ribcages. While even a little exposure to asbestos could cause the disease, it's far more likely to occur in people who were exposed over longer periods of time. It's real possible that you aren't even aware that you were ever working around asbestos, because it was common for employers back then to withhold from their employees the information that was coming out regarding asbestos exposure. Some examples of people who may have been innocently exposed prior to the 1970s include construction workers or those who were in the Navy.

Prior to the 1970s asbestos was widely-used in many different applications. Once the reports of the health risks involved in its use started to be made public, this use of asbestos was curtailed. Before that time, however, almost every type of insulation contained asbestos, such as that used to insulate pipes, do fire-proofing, and in boilers. Types of plasters, cements, and joint compounds that came in powdered form and were intended to insulate were also full of asbestos. Since the powders caused a lot of dust, employees who breathed the air while using them were particularly vulnerable to asbestos exposure.

If you worked in the following fields prior to the mid 1970s, you may have been exposed to asbestos: * Insulation * Steel refineries and other industries that used steel * Shipyard workers * Building trades such as electrical, carpentry, or bricklaying jobs * Maintenance workers * Boilermakers * People who fabricated brakes and clutches * Paper mills

Even if you know you worked in one of these industries and could have been exposed to asbestos, there's no need to panic. Since this exposure will place you at a higher risk for Mesothelioma, however, you'll want to make sure your doctor knows all the specifics. He may even want to run some tests just to make sure that you aren't showing any signs of the disease. Most likely he will want to do a complete physical if you haven't had one lately and have some x-rays taken of your chest and abdominal area. He might want you to take pulmonary function tests, a CT scan, or an MRI. If you show no symptoms, then you're clear for now, but you'll have to keep watch for the development of the condition all the rest of your life.

If the time comes when you're diagnosed with Mesothelioma, one of the first things you'll want to do is to hire a lawyer who specializes in cases involving the disease. He will be able to evaluate your claim and file a suit against your employer seeking damages if it can be proven that there was any negligence on the part of your employer in withholding information or not providing the safety equipment you needed. - 29763

Asbestosis Mesothelioma - How It Occurs And How To Cope With It

By Heidi Wingrain

Asbestosis mesothelioma affects the parenchyma tissue of the lungs and it is caused due to over exposure to asbestos particles. Hence it is a work related malady like mesothelioma cancer. The parenchymal tissues would permanently remain painful and irritable causing dyspnea or shortness of breath. Here lies enhanced chances of contracting lung cancer. Over exposure to asbestos would result in formation of plaque above the diaphragm and it can be found out in X-ray tests.

The initial symptom of asbestosis mesothelioma is breathing difficulties and seriously affected persons may witness total respiratory failure. The disease usually does not show up before ten years after asbestos exposure. But there are documented cases where the ailment became visible after just three months. There are two types of asbestos particles, namely, amphibole, which are thin and straight, and serpentine, which is curved. It is the former that creates asbestosis because it can penetrate deep into the lungs through inhalation and scar lung tissues around terminal bronchioles and alveolar ducts.

The asbestos fibers enter the air sacs of alveoli, where oxygen is routed into the blood. There they rouse the lung's inbuilt immune system into getting swollen with the aim of rejecting the foreign body. To get the intruder digested, the body releases macrophages, but asbestos being indigestible, the macrophages tend to die. The result would be the release of cytokines, which further invite more macrophages. This extra accumulation results in thickening of alveolar walls. The elasticity of the walls and transmission of gases get reduced hindering oxygen transfer into the blood.

The patients who are seriously affected may experience inspiratory crackles and clubbing of fingers. It may not be a fatal disease, but can in turn result in severe medical problems like heart failure. In about half of the asbestosis patients, plaque is developed in the chest and lung cavities.

Successful treatment is not available for asbestosis mesothelioma presently. But breathing problems can be alleviated by regular oxygen therapy administered at home. Respiratory physiotherapy, chest percussion, vibration and nebulization are other supportive treatments available for diluting secretions that are responsible for shortness of breath. Asbestosis mesothelioma patients can also claim compensation from their errant employers. - 29763

Mesothelioma Cancer Lawyer: A Huge Help In Trouble

By Heidi Wingrain

Mesothelioma is a sort of cancer that is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malevolent cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers almost all of the body's internal organs. Its commonest site is the pleura ( outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall ), but it may also occur in the peritoneum ( the lining of the intestinal cavity ), the heart, the pericardium ( a sac that surrounds the heart ) or tunica vaginalis.

Mesothelioma cancer lawyer is a legal representative working exclusively in the field of mesothlioma litigation. Mesothelioma cancer is caused due to over exposure to asbestos and it occurs mainly in the work places. The owners of the factories dealing with asbestos put the health of their employees at risk, by not taking any precautionary measures. Here the law comes to assist the hapless victims who suffer for no fault of theirs. The victims can approach the law for getting compensation from the errant employers.

In most states, mesothelioma compensation can be filed only within two years of diagnosis. There has been a splurge in the lawsuits filed against defendants including asbestos producers, government and insurance corporations, factory owners etc who use asbestos extensively. Asbestos exposure may occur to people living near mines from where asbestos is extracted. Not only that the relatives of workers can also get infected. Whatever may be the case, the importance of a mesothelioma cancer lawyer cannot be discounted at all in the compensation procedure. The procedure for getting the compensation should start immediately after the diagnosis and the lawyer is the important link between the patient, the jury and the defendants.

There are two ways in which an attorney can help you. By filing a suit and presenting facts on your behalf before the jury, he can file a suit for you. The lawyer can also bring about a mesothelioma settlement if the defendant is willing and this would result in saving your money, time and energy. The outcome and the amount awarded depend on the expertise and experience of the lawyer in both the cases. Therefore, only a specialized mesothelioma cancer lawyer should be appointed to represent your case. The ultimate result of the case lies in the ability of the lawyer.

In the case of mesothelioma compensation, the legal procedure is very complicated. This is mainly because the cancer is found only after many years of exposure. There are instances where defendants evade their responsibility citing the fact that most of the asbestos laws present now were non-existent at the time of such exposure. But the truth is that a seasoned mesothelioma cancer lawyer can beat all arguments, seal all loopholes and present a winning lawsuit to get maximum compensation for the victims. - 29763

Home Remedies Using 3 Natural Home ingredients

By Richard Ealom

Home cures are varied and quite common. Many home remedies are obtainable for your use and trial and creating an exhaustive list could take you weeks. The three remedies offered in this article will introduce you to some routine treatments for routine problems.

(1) Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Apple cider vinegar isn't simply useful as a component in dishes such as marinades and salad dressings, it has long been used as a cure-all for a variety of conditions. This remedy is also something you can produce at home from simple ingredients.

Apple Cider Vinegar Uses:

(1) Reduced Acid Reflux (2) Control of Allergies and their Symptoms (3) Decreased Sinus Infections (4) Improved Energy and reduced tiredness (5) Treatment of sore throats (6) soothing of sunburns and insect bites (7) Application to the hair to make it shiny (8) Dandruff treatments

ACV has loads of beneficial ingredients that contribute to its effectiveness. These consist of potassium, pectin, malic acid, calcium, and acetic acid. Potassium is valuable in the prevention of hair loss, brittle teeth, and recurring nasal drips. Pectin is used by the body to help regulate high blood pressure. Malic acid is beneficial as an anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Calcium helps to develop stronger bones and teeth and reduces bone brittleness. Acetic acid may slow the absorption of starches which reduces the body's reaction to manufacture glucose.

Loads of recipes are to be had online if you wish to make your own ACV. The method isn't complex, and is not too time consuming. But if you desire, you can procure your apple cider vinegar from the majority of grocery stores. Always go for the most untreated and raw options as these have retained as much of their healthful properties as possible.

(2) Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen Peroxide Uses (H2O2):

Hydrogen peroxide is not only effective in cleaning and flushing of wounds, it can also be used as a mouthwash, teeth whitener, ear cleanser, and may even be beneficial in treating the flu.

Hydrogen peroxide is routinely used as a mouthwash, it cleans the mouth much like it cleans wounds. The added benefit is Hydrogen peroxide's whitening affects. These properties can also help in gradually whitening your teeth and are less destructive than harsh store purchased teeth whitening systems.

For ear cleaning, hydrogen peroxide can be used on a cotton swab for external cleaning or used as a flush with an ear syringe to clean out excess ear wax from the canal. To clean the ears on the outside, just dab a cotton swab into the hydrogen peroxide and then swab the crevices of the ear. It is not recommended to put the cotton swab inside the ear canal, as you can injure your ear drum. For internal cleaning of the canal, use an ear syringe filled with the H2O2 and shoot it into the ear canal, then let it drain out. The H2O2 will melt the built-up ear wax and let it drain out of the canal.

Cleaning your ears with hydrogen peroxide does not only reduce ear wax build-up, it is also a valuable treatment for the flu. Simple applications of 2 to three drops of H2O2 into the ear canal at several times a day drasticallydiminishes the time needed to heal from cold and flu symptoms. Each application of hydrogen peroxide kills the cold or influenza virus on contact. You may only have to apply it into one of your ears, but if both are affected, simply apply the solution to both.

(3) Baking Soda

Baking Soda Uses:

Baking soda has tons of uses in baking and food preparation, but it is also helpful in treating common ailments and is a highly effective cleaning agent - and it doesn't produce those noxious fumes like those store bought cleaners do.

Cleaning Properties of Baking Soda:

Create a paste with baking soda and a little h2o to use as a scour for sinks, bathtubs and showers, stove tops and ovens, and any where else in your home where you require a slight abrasive product to eradicate grime and build-up.

Dust baking soda into your drains to freshen up and eliminate disgusting smells.

Employ baking soda as a toothpaste to whiten teeth and take off plaque build-up.

Baking soda can in addition be used as an effective facial scrub.

Baking Soda Uses For Ordinary Ails

(A) Put a half teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of h2o and mix to dissolve. Drink this mixture for a extremely rapid acting and effective treatment for heartburn and digestive disorders.

(B) Shake baking soda into a bowl of water and dissolve. Drench a rag with this mix and apply to the skin to treat minor burns, sunburns, and other skin irritations like razor burn, itching, and poison ivy rashes.

(C) Sprinkle baking soda on your feet prior to putting on socks to treat and avert recurring athlete's foot.

These three home cures aren't the leading three for no reason. The uses offered here in this article are only a few of the variety of uses for these 3 products. However if you are working on building up your arsenal of trouble-free home remedies to treat yourself and your family, these three are the best places to start. Yeast Infections- Natural Home Cures

By Richard Ealom

Yeast infections are frequently found below the breast, in the vagina, underneath the skin folds, and even at the lower abdomen area. But you do not have to be put out about the irritations owing to this infection. In addition, spending a ton of money on medical doctors or prescription medications is not a requirement. Straightforward home-grown treatments for a yeast infection have been verified to offer economical and trustworthy remedies for this problem.

It is important to bear in mind that the best treatment is to keep your body sanitary and all the time keep the infected area dry no matter what homemade remedies for a yeast infection that you are using. In order to keep the infected area dry and clean, you can dust talcum powder on the area.

White vinegar is one of the homemade cures for a yeast infection that you can apply. It has been confirmed to be an especially effective cure for yeast infections. Also, the unpleasant revolting odor caused by yeast at the infected areas can be removed by it. It will help out to ease the burning sensation due to the yeast. All you need to do is to apply the vinegar on the infected parts or douching it with vinegar.

You can use apple cider vinegar as an alternative to white vinegar. This is habitually used as a good first aid when the infection is diagnosed. This approach will not trigger any side effects and do not discolor the body tissues. Thus, it is one of the top household cures for a yeast infection.

There are certain other alternatives which can be consumed inside the body as well those which are used superficially. One such substitute is plain yogurt and it is a highly recommended cure. Always use sugar free plain yogurt lacking any flavors.

As it has good antiseptic properties, you can simply eat the yogurt. You can also use it on the exterior to be applied on affected areas. However, do not let it come in contact with the skin for protracted periods of time as this might generate some side effects because of the moisture it contains. Following 10-15 minutes of application, it should be washed off.

An enormous foe of fungus and yeast is garlic. A a small number of cloves of garden-fresh garlic can be ground or smashed and the paste put on the infected area. The dreadful odor due to the yeast can even be stopped by it. On the other hand, you will have to stand the odor of the garlic instead, which most of us loathes. This is also considered one of the good home-based cures for a yeast infection since garlic has very powerful antibiotic as well as antiseptic properties.

Drinking a lot of h2o is the easiest of all these domestic remedies. You need to drink as a minimum four-5 glasses of fresh h2o on a daily basis. What's more bathe the infected parts with clean water. Water is the best cleaning agent, both within your body as well as outside. Filtered water or mineral water is best.

Several herbs can be employed for yeast infections. One illustration is Oregano herb. This famous herb can be used for yeast infection remedies.

These readily on hand natural home-grown remedies for a yeast infection are very nontoxic and reliable. You do not have to spend a lot of money on them. As these home-produced treatments do not have side effects, they are completely harmless to utilize. - 29763

Blood Based Markers for Mesothelioma Detection

By Sally Clapper

Mesothelioma is an uncommon malignancy caused primarily by exposure to asbestos. Millions of people in the United States alone have been exposed to asbestos and are in danger of developing malignant mesothelioma. The number of patients diagnosed with mesothelioma is expected to continue to rise until 2020. In undeveloped countries where the use of asbestos has not been banned, the rate of asbestos-related disease will climb higher and for much longer.

Asbestos refers to a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals that, until the mid'80's, was widely manufactured, distributed and used in many industries. Thousands of asbestos containing products continue to exist in buildings, ships and automobiles today. When these materials are disturbed or damaged, such as through demolition, asbestos can be released into the air and create a risk to public health.

Asbestos fibers, when inhaled or ingested, become embedded in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart and lay dormant for many years. Only decades later do symptoms of mesothelioma begin to appear. Even then symptoms can be very general and are often very difficult to identify. The challenge then becomes diagnosing the disease early before it reaches more advanced stages.

Many research centers are dedicated to finding a cure and striving to find ways to improve clinical outcomes for those diagnosed with mesothelioma. One hope is to discover better ways to diagnose mesothelioma earlier. Early detection has been historically very difficult and imperfect.

Research is now focusing on finding blood based biomarkers that would be successful in identifying malignant mesothelioma, especially in high risk patients. New serological markers are being explored that may prove valuable in early detection. One particular protein, soluble mesothelin, has shown some promise in specifying asbestos related mesothelioma. Others proteins, such as osteopontin and also combinations of markers and new modalities, have been tried with insufficient results.

Researchers continue their efforts to find new markers to use in the evaluation of patients who have a history of asbestos exposure. If mesothelioma can be detected earlier, new treatments and even a cure might be discovered. The costs of treating mesothelioma are high, both to patients and family members as well as financially. Any advances in detection methods would be useful for diagnosis of the disease and could possibly save thousands of lives. - 29763

Helping Those with Mesothelioma Face End of Life

By Sally Clapper

Malignant mesothelioma is caused by tumors growing on the mesothelium, which is the thin protective sac surrounding the lungs (pleura), abdomen (peritoneum) or heart (pericardium.) Mesothelioma is typically due to exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that was once widely used in many industrial products, such as insulation, ceiling and roofing materials, brake linings, and wall panelings. Each year in the United States up to 3,000 new cases are diagnosed. Numbers are even higher in other areas of the world.

Mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose. Most diagnosis occurs when patients are in their 50's to 70's as there is a long latency period between the initial time of exposure and the development of symptoms. In addition, mesothelioma is often mistakenly identified as another type of cancer or respiratory illness. Because of these issues, most mesotheliomas are not diagnosed until after the disease has progressed to advanced stages.

Typically patients and their loved ones go through months before mesothelioma is accurately identified and sometimes undergo a variety of treatments before being told that the cancer has reached advanced stages. Advanced stage mesothelioma means the cancer is incurable and beyond being controlled by medical interventions.

It can be devastating to learn that your disease is untreatable and that your life expectancy is very short. Accepting that most patients diagnosed with mesothelioma typically have less than a year to live is very difficult for everyone.

Once over the initial shock, there are some things that a patient and caregiver can do to help during such difficult times. One is to learn as much as possible about what to expect and also explore options where choices do exist. Another is to continue to demand excellent care from your medical team and on-going support from others. Talking about any concerns, as well as any regrets and specific wishes you may have can be very helpful. Make sure to write down how you wish to live and how you wish to die, and enlist the help of others to make sure this happens. Having a support group to share any feelings and express grief can be hugely supportive.

Other avenues to explore are whether there are any existing treatments that could slow the progression of the disease or help alleviate any pain or side effects. Palliative care and hospice workers should be able to help keep the patient in as much comfort as possible. Find out from your oncology specialist what other options may exist in your area.

Typically, Stage IV mesothelioma patients can choose one or more of the following: standard therapy, alternative treatment, hospice or home care. Often decisions are made as a team, including the doctors, nurses, patient, family members and caregivers. It's important that everyone involved know your desires about treatment and what you request at the end of your life.

Mesothelioma can take an emotional as well as physical toll on everyone. Having conversations about dying can be difficult to approach, yet often also lead to patients and loved ones feeling as if the have more control, dignity and peace in the process. It is also important to have strategies in place and a support network. Planning in advance can help relieve financial, legal and emotional burdens for everyone. Families can avoid a lot of conflict and future problems by broaching the difficult subject of death.

Being diagnosed with advanced stage mesothelioma is challenging. For some, it is also a time for resolving unfinished business, dealing with regrets, realizing what is important in life, and really feeling gratitude for the moments of kindness, peace and love that exist. Every person has their own reaction and approach to dying. It's important to be mindful that not everyone will be comfortable expressing thoughts and emotions about approaching the end of life, and to respect individual preferences.

If you need help with the costs of medical treatments and getting financial compensation, contact an attorney who specializes in asbestos litigation and mesothelioma lawsuits. Like physicians that specialize in treating asbestos related cancers, a mesothelioma lawyer will have expertise that more effectively and quickly gets you and your family the help you need.

Many patients and caregivers wish they had known to ask certain questions before the cancer had progressed too far. If you have been diagnosed with late stage mesothelioma and want to have the most choice in the months ahead, please do not hesitate on having these conversations. - 29763

The Basics of Lung Cancer Treatment

By Brian Rodane

Lung cancer is the leading cause of death due to cancer in the United States, though many people are under the impression that only smokers are affected, the truth is that around two-thirds of patients have never smoked or quit. Lung cancer affects more people than the three other major cancer conditions combined - breast, prostrate and colon cancer.
Lung cancer is diagnosed by a series of tests, some or all of which will be utilized by an oncologist (cancer specialist). These tests include the following:

CT Scan
PET Scan
Bronchoscopy
Needle biopsy
Surgical biopsy

Once a diagnosis of lung cancer has been established, your doctor will need to assess the stage of the disease. Staging is the process by which the cancer is assessed and categorized; this is essential for determining an effective treatment regime which will depend on a number of detailed factors. Factors include the size of the tumor, location, whether it is primary (originated in the lungs) or metastasized (spread to the lungs from another tumor elsewhere in the body), whether it has spread to the lymph nodes and many other factors.

Staging is frequently referred to as TNM - Tumor, Lymph Nodes, Metastasized.

Treatment regimes will be determined by the type of lung cancer a patient has acquired. Metastasized cancer is treated differently from primary cancer - in the latter case, the tumor originates in the lung and can be treated by surgery in the early stages backed up by chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Metastasized cancer cannot be so easily treated by surgery unless the cancer is non-aggressive and the tumor of relatively small size.

Your doctor will probably recommend minimally invasive surgery for early stage, primary lung cancer and this has distinct advantages in both treatment outcome and for the patient. Minimally invasive techniques do not involve opening the thoracic cavity (the chest) and is not major surgery with the attendant risks that carries. It is usual for a patient to be up and walking within a couple of hours of the procedure and to be home within a day or two of being admitted to hospital. Chemotherapy or radiation treatment may be used to follow up the removal (known as a resection) of the cancerous lung tissue.

Traditional open surgery may be used where the cancer is located in an inaccessible portion of the lungs or is at a stage where minimally invasive techniques are not appropriate. This requires an incision in the side of the chest (the flank) and the spreading of the ribs to gain access to the area where the tumor is located. This involves additional pain and discomfort for the patient and a longer stay in hospital with a longer recovery period, which is why minimally invasive techniques are often preferred. Again, the operation will frequently be followed up by additional chemotherapy or radiation treatment where necessary.

Where the disease has reached a stage at which it is incurable, palliative surgery may be undertaken to help the patient's quality of life, such as the removal of the tumor which has become of a size where airways are being obstructed. - 29763
